Dasham initiative
  • Children ask parties to include them in manifestos.
  • The children’s demands included construction of toilets in schools, free distribution of sanitary pads, power supply in villages, mandatory holding of ‘Baal Sabha’ in village panchayats and improvement in Anganwadi centre services. “All political parties should establish separate cells for children,”.
Mammals of India (MaOI)
  • Scientists and researchers from the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) in Bangalore have come up with a new citizen-science repository on Indian mammals, called Mammals of India (MaOI), which is an online, peer- reviewed, freely-accessible portal that was launched late September 2018.
  • As per current estimates, 426 species of mammals are found in India; of them 47 species are endemic to the Indian subcontinent.
  • The website provides an opportunity to any person to upload geotagged photographic observations about mammals with information on habitat age of the observed individual. Over time, these observations will be reviewed by subject experts and uploaded on the website.
Article 25 of the Indian Constitution
  • It clarifies that people’s freedom to profess and practise religion shall not inhibit the state from regulating secular activity associated with religious practice.
Article 17 of the Indian Constitution
  • That abolishes “untouchability”. Neither this article nor the Untouchability (Offences) Act defines untouchability.
  • Derived from the word “untouchable” — a word coined for the vernacular expression achhut — it refers to a custom which puts so-called lower castes in this category.
